So, what do you need to know about Whey Protein Powders?
Whey Protein Powder is quite possibly the most popular of all the various protein powder options; and really, that’s with good cause. In most eyes, whey protein is the ultimate protein source with which to supplement your workout schedule. First, some of the technical details: Whey protein comes from milk. In fact, to be more precise, whey protein is created during the process of turning milk into cheese, which is when they whey is extracted. As with other forms of protein powders, Whey Protein comes in two forms: Whey Protein Concentrate, and Whey Protein Isolate. Whey Protein Isolate is the more pure between the two, and as such is obviously the more expensive.
Ok, so let’s get a bit more specific. How does Whey Protein stack up when it comes to your workout? Well, let’s look at that in sections.
Digestibility and Amino Acids
Digestibility & Amino Acids should always be a factor when it comes to making your decision on what Protein Powder is right for you. And when it comes to examining Digestibility and Amino Acids, there’s a good yardstick to use… it’s called the PDCAAS, or Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score. What’s that? Well, the definition of the PDCAAS, given to us from Wikipedia again is:
a method of evaluating the protein quality based on the amino acid requirements of humans. The PDCAAS rating is a fairly recent evaluation method (it was adopted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization (FAO/WHO) in 1993 as “the preferred ‘best’” method to determine protein quality.
So, now we know what it is, how does Whey Protein stack up? Well, Whey Proteins score a 1.14 on the PDCAAS score… which is higher than the highest rating allowed by the USDA, which is 1.0… which is why Whey Protein Powder is reported as a 1.0. Think about that for a second… it achieves higher than the maximum allowed score!
Who should take Whey Protein Supplements?
Athletes, bodybuilders… heck, pretty much anyone who leads an active lifestyle. Why? It’s simple… as a direct preceding factor to muscle building and essential amino acids (such as glutamine, which is not only a muscle enhancer, but also a muscle recuperative force), the taking of high quality whey protein powder will help one’s muscles recover faster, and grow quicker by upping the levels of protein in the body.
Coming soon, we’ll be able to list specific brands of whey protein that we can recommend. Keep checking back for updates!
